Program Overview & Participation
Day One Access is a program that provides your required digital materials by the first day of class, right in Canvas, at up to 80% off the price of purchasing a printed textbook.
No. All students enrolled in a participating course will automatically be opted in and gain access to the materials.
No. Instructors can decide whether or not Day One Access is right for their class. If you are enrolled in a class participating in Day One Access, you will be notified via email before the quarter starts.
Instructors decide which required materials they would like to be included. Recommended or optional materials will not be included, but can be purchased through University Book Store at the current retail price.
All students in a participating course are automatically opted in to begin the quarter. If you prefer to obtain the materials on your own, you can choose to opt out.
Yes, but only until the payment deadline. After that, the opting button on the Day One Access Materials page in Canvas will become inactive.
Accessing Materials
Log into your course in Canvas, and depending on the type of materials, you will either access them through the Day One Access Materials page, or through a specialized link that your instructor has placed. Refer to your course syllabus for specific information.
Generally, no. If an access code is required, you will be able to retrieve it on the Day One Access Materials page in Canvas, along with the instructions to redeem it. University Book Store will not send access codes or instructions out via email.
There are two possible reasons for this. It could be because your instructor has not published the course in Canvas yet, or it could be because you registered for the course very recently. If you register after the first day of classes, it takes about 1-2 business days for your materials to appear in Canvas.
Billing & Payment
Log into MyUW and go to your Accounts page. Your balance due will appear on this page in the Tuition & Fees section, under the UW Day One Access Fees header. Click the button underneath your balance, and follow the prompts to complete payment. You will receive an order confirmation from University Book Store after submitting payment.
You will have about three weeks from the first day of classes to submit payment during the regular academic year, and about two weeks in the summer. The specific deadline will be posted to our website, sent out via email, and posted in your course syllabus.
No. The balance for your Day One Access materials is NOT included in your tuition balance and must be paid separately. It is also not covered automatically by financial aid or most scholarships. If you have federal aid or a scholarship that is disbursed directly to you, it is your responsibility to set funds aside to pay for your materials.
However, your materials will be covered by your funding if you are a student athlete on book scholarship, or have another type of funding which covers course materials and is billed directly through University Book Store (ex: Veterans Affairs, Voc Rehab, etc). If you are not sure whether your Day One Access materials will be covered, or whether you will need to pay for them yourself, check with your adviser.
Payments need to be reported back to UW, so it takes about 24-48 hours for your balance to update. If your payment was successfully submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Do not submit your payment again.
Possibly. If you do not receive an order confirmation after submitting your payment, check your junk/spam folder to see if the email ended up there, and check your bank account/statement to see if the money came out of your account. If you did not receive an email and no money was deducted from your account, you will need to submit your payment again.
No. You must send an email with your order number, and which materials need to be refunded, to txtsupport@ubookstore.com.
If you do not submit payment by the deadline, you will be opted out and lose access to your materials. Once access has been revoked, you will encounter a paywall when trying to access your materials in Canvas. If you still need access to the materials, we strongly recommend paying this way, but you will no longer get the Day One Access price.
Support & Troubleshooting

This is likely due to a browser issue, and you may need to update your settings. Refer to this VitalSource article for help.
If this occurs just after the payment deadline, it’s likely that your license for the materials needs to be updated, and accessing your materials again directly through Canvas, rather than VitalSource Bookshelf or the publisher’s website, typically resolves this problem. If not, contact us for further assistance.
